Plate-itude

O, circular dishware,

you have always intrigued me.

Your versatility is proven,

but your recognition

is abysmal.

Separating food from table,

you appease the germaphobes.

Saving art teachers

from the perilous task

of being original.

Just buy a 20-pack,

a bunch of markers,

and let them deface it.

Face it,

you were born to please.

  1. Wow. This piece really shows the importance of little things in our lives. Now, of course, no one really thinks much of a plate or its importance, but surely if there were no plates, or other simple commodities, one would feel their absence. I'm left wondering, how did you come to write this piece? Was it in the spur of the moment? Or something you always thought of?

    1. This piece was completely spontaneous. Similar to my free-verse poems I used a random object generator and this word appeared. The subject matter was something that just came naturally to me, as if it was hidden away in my brain. Everything just clicked. We as humans take the little things for granted. If plates disappeared we would have to resort to our old methods. I titled it plate-itude because i believe it is a platitude: a remark or statement, especially one with a moral content, that has been used too often to be interesting or thoughtful.

    2. The title itself is so creative! it fits the piece very well.
