Hey!
You!
Put back that $4.99
jar of vegan peanut butter
you stole from Whole Foods.
Just because the streets are
swarming with proclaimed sacrilege
doesn’t mean you can wreck your way
down the condiment aisle.
Are you really enraged
at what’s happening in the world;
about what’s being protested,
or are you simply an opportunist?
Ask yourself this the next time
a riot starts,
because what looks like fun
weighs heavy on future hearts.
I really like how you use the idea of stealing the jar of vegan peanut butter to show the nature of some people. I think you did very well in portraying how some individuals use the world as an excuse for their actions, some even take it as a joke, thinking, "others have done worse, so it's okay if I do this", but in the end that's just a rationalization--a way to cope with themselves. Anyway, I think this piece really shows that, it might seem like a simple piece on the first read, but it means a whole lot. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe jar of vegan peanut butter for me could have been anything else. I just picked the funniest thing I could think of at the time. The word I got from the random word generator I used was looting. And once I got that word I couldn't help but think how stupid people are to use a potential movement to bring about change as a way to steal.
DeleteMaybe If I was in that situation, and it was a matter of convenience, like I just walk past and pick it up, I might partake.
I think the jar of vegan peanut butter was a very creative choice, indeed comical. I also think negatively of looting especially when one engages in looting at their own community, which I think it's what happened in recent times, people looted businesses in "protest" and ended up harming many of those they claimed to be standing up for.
